3/9/15..no more snow days on the horizon and two full weeks under our belts with more to come....
we celebrated Christopher's birthday and Janessa's and Tina's as well....we waited for 100th day and it was a fun day....we enjoyed valentines day and the vacation...
We are working on synonyms and antonyms, contractions and plural forms of words...
We started place value...
We are having an ongoing discussion of the meaning of Lent, the Three days and Easter ...
We learned about Presidents Day and we did lots of other learning, too.
WELL....we have made the transition to a new room.
Christopher A. wrote"so far, I like this room. Our 1A friends are with us. That is what makes it fun! It is a long walk to Art and Computer and we eat lunch in our room!
This is me...
The Christmas Show was terrific! Everyone was fabulous!
We learned about exclamatory sentences this week and how to use them.
We have been learning how to use a ten frame to understand numbers and addition and subtraction sentences.
We have started the journey to Christmas by reading and talking about how hard it is to wait for something and what Advent means.
In Reading, Phonics and Spelling, we have worked on syllables, ending consonant blends and the sound of vowels. We have discussed main idea and details in a story and used adjectives in our writing during Writing Workshop.
We have been practicing our 2 songs for our Christmas show on Tuesday, December 9 at 6:30...mandatory attendance.....
We have learned about Plimoth Plantation and examined pictures which depict the way the pilgrims dressed and what they ate and how they lived their lives. We read about Sarah and her day from sunrise to sunset and decided that our life now is a little easier.
11/10/14 We learned why Veteran's Day is celebrated and how to thank a veteran should we see one.
We are proceeding through our Reading Street book. We finished the R unit on October 24th and began Unit One on October 27th. The theme for this unit is "How are People and Animals important to each other?" We will explore the genres of stories and discuss how we can impact the lives of animals.
In Phonics we have developed the short sounds of a and -ack, i and -ix and, this week, o and -ock, among other sounds.
We hollowed out a pumpkin, counted seeds, compared the number of seeds we had with those that 1a collected and carved a happy jack-o-lantern. Monster Mash was awesome!
In Math, we are dealing with those pesky fact families and how addition and subtraction are related.
We discussed fire safety and listened and responded to Stop!Drop and Roll by Margery Cuyler. We also discovered from the scholastic news paper that goats are responsible for keeping the threat of wildfires down in the west because they enjoy eating all the grass on the prairies and hillsides .
We also discussed Economics in Social Studies and prioritized the needs and wants in our lives.
We went to Parlee Farms and had a great time. We had a tractor ride to the orchard where we selected 4 perfect Macoun apples before climbing back on the hayride. Thanks go to Nathan's Dad and BJ's Dad for holding us up high to get the ones at the tops of the trees.
Then we walked into the Pumpkin Patch to pick the perfect one. Then we had lunch and fed the goats and rabbits and played on the haymaze. As we left the farm, we got many compliments from the workers because we were well-behaved and respectful and co-operative. That made us feel good inside. Look for the photos on memory page 2014.
We have painted the suncatchers for our sunny windows. We have learned that the part of the Earth we are on moves away from the sun during the day. We track this movement by watching the colors of our suncatchers move across the floor from 7:30 to lunchtime. Then we can't see them anymore. That is our first SCIENCE lesson.
Our second SCIENCE lesson was about magnets. If we placed one magnet on top of our desk and one inside, we could make magic happen with the one on top of our desk. We learned that the poles on the magnet can attract and repel. And our magnets could "fly" toward each other if we held them right.
Our third SCIENCE lesson was about our skeleton and as we assembled one, we learned how important helmets and knee pads are when we play sports and seatbelts or car seats are when we ride in cars.
We have memorized and recited our first POEM "Oodles of Noodles", for the Poetry Perfect Award and have recited our second one, "Manners". Our third poem is called "My School Lunch"..Be listening for it. Congratulations to all those who won the poetry perfect award this week.
We sing songs about the days of the week and vowels, and silly songs, too.
In Phonics and Reading, we are reviewing the letters and their sounds, building words and sentences, and reading and responding to stories with Reading Street.
Our Math work is skip counting to twenty, recognizing the names for the numbers, using dominoes to make addition sentences and discovering number fact families. We have started finding other names for numbers and finding the whole-part-part of subtraction.
We have been to Mass at St. Gregory's with Father Daily.
We have had our wonderful specialists for Art, Music, Computer and Gym.
We know that every day will be different, and that everyday we should learn something new!
